1.3.1 Troubleshooting Methodology - Quick Notes
This lesson explains the standard CompTIA troubleshooting process. The speaker goes through each step in order and shows how a technician can stay organized by taking notes, testing carefully, and documenting results.
The Six-Step Process
- Identify the problem.
- Establish a theory of probable cause.
- Test the theory to determine the cause.
- Establish a plan of action and implement the solution.
- Verify full system functionality and apply preventive measures.
- Document findings, actions, and outcomes.
Identify the Problem
Start by gathering information. Ask questions, observe the symptoms, and find out what changed before the issue started. Good notes at this stage make the rest of troubleshooting easier.
Build and Test a Theory
Use the symptoms to form a likely explanation, then test that theory with a controlled step. If the theory is wrong, move to another possibility instead of guessing randomly.
Plan Before Acting
Once the cause is understood, choose the fix carefully. Consider policies, procedures, impact on users, and the possibility that a change could affect other systems.
Verify the Result
After applying the fix, confirm that the original problem is gone and that the full system still works correctly. If possible, include preventive steps so the issue is less likely to happen again.
Document Everything
Record the symptoms, cause, tests, solution, and final outcome. Clear documentation helps with future incidents and shows exactly what was done.
