1.2.4 Question the Obvious - Quick Notes
Simple problems can cause complex-seeming issues, so do not skip the obvious. Be systematic and detail-oriented.
How to Isolate the Problem
- Step through what should happen yourself or watch the user do it to find the exact failure point.
- If that does not work, break it into categories: power, hardware, drivers or firmware, software, network, and user actions.
PC Troubleshooting Order
- Determine whether it is a hardware or software issue.
- Identify which hardware subsystem may be involved, such as the hard drive, power supply, or RAM.
- Check the physical unit or connectors and cabling. For software issues, try uninstalling and reinstalling or performing file system repair.
- Test your theory.
Pro Tip
Keep a known good duplicate cable or device on hand so you can test by substitution.
