2.3.1 DVI and VGA Video Cables - Notes
Key rule: Both DVI and VGA carry video only. Neither one carries audio.
DVI (Digital Visual Interface)
DVI was introduced in 1999 and can support analog output, digital output, or both depending on the connector type. It is no longer actively developed and is mostly found on older hardware.
| Type | Signal |
|---|---|
| DVI-A | Analog only |
| DVI-D (single/dual link) | Digital only |
| DVI-I (single/dual link) | Both analog and digital |
Dual link DVI includes extra pins for higher bandwidth.
VGA (Video Graphics Array)
- 15-pin connector
- Analog only
- Long-time standard for PC monitors, now being phased out
- Maximum resolution up to 1080p, depending on cable quality
- D-shell connector with screw locks
Quick Memory Trick
The DVI letter tells you the signal type: A for analog, D for digital, and I for integrated (both).
Key Things to Remember
- DVI and VGA both carry video only.
- VGA is always analog.
- DVI may be analog, digital, or both depending on the connector type.
- DVI is newer than VGA, but both are now mostly associated with older systems.
